| The good: Brother's graduation from Patten University in Oakland on Saturday. The bad: Too much work......I need a vacation . Soon I tell you, soon enough I will take a vacation. The ugly: Unexpected events putting a big cramp in scheduled activities.....argh! The verdict: It was a pretty darn good week. The best part of the week? My brother's graduation. I was so proud of him and the way he's perservered through school. My gift to him was the post graduation reception/dinner in the large lawn area out back at Rickey's in Novato. It's connected to the Inn at Marin in Marin County and is right up next to the hills in Novato. It was nice, food was great and we had over 20 people there. I think he enjoyed it quite nicely. The next best thing? Getting interviewed for a few minutes by NBC-11 TV live in San Francisco on Monday late morning about my race in Death Valley. Totally didn't expect the call I got this past weekend from the reporter. They let me put a big plug in for World Harvest Mission's work in Africa and their website, as well as my own website/story. They even showed part of my video/pics from last year's race on TV. I haven't seen it yet, so I can't wait till they send me a copy of that portion of the broadcast. I'll post it up on the web when I get the copy. Very cool to see your work help bring light to God's work....... | | |
| Sometimes, it's good to get away from "the norm". Routines can be both the stability we crave and the ordinary which we loathe. For me, I've been in the routine of high school youth ministry in San Francisco for the past 2.5 years. While it has been good, it is time for me to take a break, at least for awhile. So starting at the beginning of June, I will be stepping away from that commitment through August. Part of it is the opportunity to explore some other ministry opportunities and part of it is to simply allow myself to recharge my batteries/reinvigorate my soul......My heart is definitely for those in this world who are marginalized or outcast or looked down upon, but that is a pretty big group by itself. What will I do? What will God do with me? In other news, I got the first designs by email from someone who's helping me design my team logo for Badwater this year. They are going to be affixed/embroidered on technical shirts (soccer style with white as dominant color) and a few friends are going to help sell them for charity. It turns out to put it all together will probably run only about $20 a shirt with the embroidery. It's just a draft, but there are certain elements I like and others I don't. I have to come back to them with edits for the final copy. Here it is..... Ok, parts I like are 1) He incorporated the four quarters I wanted in the design. The four quarters represent Faith (triple crosses), Family (rampant lion is an ode to my father's scottish background), Charity (flaming heart is a Christian symbol for it), and the last one is a rising sun for new beginnings. 2) The title up top is up for debate, although United is popular for quite a few soccer clubs. 3) He incorporated the Benedictine motto on the bottom, which simply means "Pray and Work". I found it when looking for some latin phrases, and I love the fact that a Christian life is composed of both submitting to the Lord and working so that our hands are God's hands. Parts for debate are 1) Color scheme (Orange and Black would work nicely since they are both the Giants colors and Occidental's colors) 2) Banner Style, and 3) Shield style. | | |
| What's up, everyone? I know that everyone is talking about March Madness, which I generally love. However, with the lack of cinderellas, I'm just not as into it this year. Instead of sitting at home and watching college b-ball highlights, I was out at my favorite Irish pub in town. San Francisco is a great place for good places to go at night, but still can't beat chillin' at the pub with a couple of friends talking about life. Next movie to see: "Blades of Glory" and "The Last King of Scotland". I know, two very, very different types of films. I do have to say; male pairs figure skating is long overdue.....I'd pay to see jedimasterdan and kidbimmer hit the ice together. Next album to buy: Anything by Sanjaya from American Idol. Anyone that makes little girls cry for him to stop must be good. He's going to be rich; why split album sales 5 ways (i.e. any other boy band) when it can go all go to one. Current Top 10 must do outdoor adventures (that I haven't done yet): 1) Climb Mt. McKingley 2) Boating down the Amazon 3) Backpacking in New Zealand 4) Exploring Israel 5) Machu Pichu 6) Climb Mt. Everest 7) Nepal 8) Malaysia 9) Cage Diving with sharks in South Africa 10) Antarctica (not just for the penguins) | | |
| I spent the weekend in Texas outside Houston (in Sugarland) at my cousin's wedding. Having never been to Texas, it was an eye-opening weekend filled with lots of meat, people drinking horrible beer, and country music. I think the funniest part was the sing-along the entire bar started at the wedding after-party to some Rascal Flatts' song that even the guys were singing along. It was not the sappy one on pop radio, but some other country song. All in all, most of the locals were nice enough, and I even got in a visit to NASA. My cousin invited me to visit he and his wife in Dallas, so I might actually go back....hmmm. | | |
| I'm glad to be back, blogging again about the significant and insignificant events of life......It was nice to not write for awhile, to allow my brain the opportunity to breathe a little bit and regain its creativity. Not much else to say right now, but did have a fun weekend in L.A. this weekend. Didn't see everyone, but tried to make the rounds before the marathon in L.A. on sunday morning. Talk to you later..... | | |
